Probability: the basic rules

Convexity Rule

For any event E with knowledge base K, your probability of E, given K, p(E|K), is a number between 0 and 1. If, on K, you know E to be true, then your probability is 1.

Addition Rule

For any two events, E and F, with knowledge base K:p(E or F|K) = p(E|K) + p(F|K) – p(EF|K)

Multiplication Rule

For any two events, E and F, with knowledge base K:P(EF|K) = P(E|K) * p(F|EK)
